That crest with an angel and a crown and the words defendamus (we defend?) - is this crest displayed in other parts of Taunton or only on this gate?

Right, got to apologise, it's not a crest is it! It's not a coat of arms either, a shield maybe?
Anyway, I have not seen it anywhere else yet but I will keep my eyes peeled - I will try and find a good shot of the full coat of arms too.

Hi Mountain boy, The face with the wings are also on a stone panel on a building in the town I cannot remember which one.
My name is Taunton and I came down to the town a few years ago. I took part in a Town Criers competition in Bridgwater and while I was down there I did a proclamation asking for any families with the name Taunton to contact me.
